{"id":466,"date":"2018-09-02T17:38:28","date_gmt":"2018-09-02T14:38:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/open-mind.lv\/empathy\/"},"modified":"2018-09-02T17:38:28","modified_gmt":"2018-09-02T14:38:28","slug":"empathy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/open-mind.lv\/en\/empathy\/","title":{"rendered":"Empathy"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Empathy and its manifestations<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the context of various events and activities, we increasingly hear the word <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/epadomi.lv\/psihologija\/veiksme_panakumi\/10022013-empatija_just_to_ko_jut_citi\"><br \/>\n  <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">empathy<\/span><br \/>\n<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sometimes confused with compassion or tolerance. But a deeper look at the concept shows that empathic feelings are much more nuanced and can bring both positive and negative feelings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-80\" src=\"https:\/\/open-mind.lv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/images.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"316\" height=\"159\" srcset=\"https:\/\/open-mind.lv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/images.png 316w, https:\/\/open-mind.lv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/images-300x151.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 316px) 100vw, 316px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The concept of empathy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Empathy is<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  a person&#8217;s ability to put themselves in someone else&#8217;s shoes, or to feel the same emotional experience. Sometimes it can take the form of compassion or emotion, not only on an emotional level but also by taking action to actually help the other person, but at other times it can also be distracting because we can become overwhelmed by events that do not directly affect us at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concept <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">definition of empathy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  interpreted as a reaction to events and other people&#8217;s emotions, but it can also sometimes take the form of justifying and understanding other people&#8217;s actions. For example, if we are confronted by a person who says harsh words to us, we can say something unkind in return, but we can also act empathetically &#8211; accepting that this aggression is a natural expression of stress and tension that we do not need to take personally. When we understand the reasons behind a person&#8217;s actions, we put ourselves in that person&#8217;s shoes and become more empathetic and understanding.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emotions evoked by empathy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<a href=\"http:\/\/www.psihoterapeitezanekrumina.lv\/raksti\/empatija\/\">manifestations of empathy<\/a> can be very diverse, as can the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emotions and feelings<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In cognitive empathy, we only understand the other person&#8217;s emotions, but this does not affect how we feel. We understand each other&#8217;s experiences, but at the same time we know that we are not affected. In emotional empathy, on the other hand, we feel other people&#8217;s experiences much more strongly, and this triggers a shift in our emotions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When looking at emotional empathy, there are two <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two types of emotion<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The selfish way of feeling for another person&#8217;s misfortune, but at the same time being glad that it is not happening to us, because our own well-being is our primary concern;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the compassionate or altruistic kind, where we really feel for the other person from the bottom of our hearts and experience equally strong emotions, for example at a funeral.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concept <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explanation of empathy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> includes a third form of empathy &#8211; empathy in action &#8211; which involves both emotional and cognitive empathy, but complements it with real action, by getting involved in the situation and doing whatever it takes to help people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-82\" src=\"https:\/\/open-mind.lv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/20170128_bkp509.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"595\" height=\"335\" srcset=\"https:\/\/open-mind.lv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/20170128_bkp509.jpg 595w, https:\/\/open-mind.lv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/20170128_bkp509-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 595px) 100vw, 595px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pros and cons of empathic emotions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tezaurs.lv\/#\/sv\/emp%C4%81tija\"><br \/>\n  <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Empathy<\/span><br \/>\n<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has the greatest benefit of improving relationships, as it involves both mutual understanding and respect, helping to avoid and quickly resolve conflicts and disputes. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Empathetic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  accepting the other person as they are, understanding their actions and not judging them, thus smoothing the relationship even in very tense moments. While there are different types of empathy, they are all rooted in understanding another&#8217;s emotions and experiences so that we learn to support and help others, but there is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.la.lv\/empatijas-tumsa-puse-par-kuru-neviens-neruna\">downside<\/a> to this as empathic people are highly sensitive and experience heightened emotional tension.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But on balance, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what is empathy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it is important not to confuse it with pity. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Empathy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  is more about understanding and support. But while we empathise with others, we must always remember that we cannot always help.
